Blue Moons
There are 12½ lunar cycles (lunar months) for every solar cycle (solar year); so each year we normally have either 12 new moons & 13 full moons or 13 new moons & 12 full moons, the extra new or full moon is known as a “Blue Moon”. Now while there is only one Blue Moon each year there are two ways of calculating it: -
- Astrologically the Blue Moon is the second new or full moon that occurs in any of the signs of the zodiac.
- Culturally the second new or full moon that occurs in any given calendar month is also a Blue Moon, known as the ‘Farmer’s Blue Moon’. To complicate things further there is a more traditional way of calculating the ‘Farmer’s Blue Moon’ that is to take the last (or fourth) new or full moon that occurs in a season. Normally there are only three.
Not only that but the sign of the zodiac or the calendar month in which either of the Blue Moons occur changes from year to year!
This year however is different: -
- There are 2 new moons in Leo, the astrological Blue Moon, but this astrological blue moon is also a total solar eclipse! - 21st August
- In 2017 there is no new moon in Capricorn.
- Note: The full moon in Leo is also an eclipse! - 11th February
So what does this mean? Big, magical, unexpected new beginnings in your life (house) which is governed by Leo! (See ‘ Primary Area of Influence - Solar Eclipse reading for the 21st August for your sign). And an ending of a phase but no significant advancement in 2017 for the area of your life (house) which is governed by Capricorn. (See ‘ Area of Influence’ - Full Moon reading for the 9th July for your sign).
